Summer Parka

This is a two day class, March 25 and 26.

Summer Parka Materials List



    • Alaskan Patterns by Lois (choose one)

      • Ladies’ No 101

      • Men’s No 102

      • Children’s No 103

    • Choose your size based on your personal measurements, NOT ready-to-wear sizing



  • Main fabricType and yardage according to pattern envelope (choose fabric amount based on selected pocket type)

  • TrimYardage according to size on pattern envelope

  • Lining (Optional): Lightweight lining fabrics are optional for a slightly heavier jacket. Same yardage as outer fabric.


Optional Piping

  • Choose either baby piping or regular piping. (Baby piping on display model.)

  • Appropriate piping foot for size of piping selected

  • Groovin’ Piping Hot Binding Trimming Tool

  • Approx. 7 yards pre-made piping

  • Or

  • ¾ yard fabric + 7 yards piping cording



  • Polyester or polyester-covered thread to match fabric


  • Heavy duty outerwear, separating zipper. Length – according to size on pattern envelope.

  • Zipper foot

  • A walking foot is recommended for velveteen or corduroy. If using Pfaff IDT, use a roller foot or Teflon foot for these fabrics.

  • Scissors: paper scissors, sewing scissors, and fabric shears

  • Scotch Tape (preferably “Magic” or one that is easily removable) for use on paper

  • Pattern tracing paper, such as Pattern Ease or medical examination table paper.

  • Colored pencil or marker for tracing pattern

  • Chalk markers: must be visible on both outer fabric and lining fabric (E.g., Sewline pencil, Clover chalk marker, or soapstone pencil marker.)

  • Water soluble basting tape (“Wonder Tape”)

  • Water soluble glue stick

  • Size 80/12 machine needles for most fabrics

  • Sharp pins with large heads, point turner, seam ripper, tape measure, seam gauge. Optional: Wonder Clips

  • Some kind of pin keeper: magnetic pincushion, wrist pincushion, etc.

  • Sewing machine: clean and in good running condition.

  • Optional: Serger – if you know how to operate it. (This class does not cover serger techniques.)

  • Writing paper and pencil for notes, questions, etc.

  • Bag lunch, snacks, and a drink for long day.

Before first class:

Pre-wash, dry, and press or steam all fabrics and any 100% cotton trims
