Notion Organizer - Machine Embroidery

Have you ever wanted to learn how to insert a zipper using your embroidery machine? Have you ever wanted to make a complete project, from start to finish, in your embroidery hoop? Learn in-the-hoop embroidery methods while making this adorable, handy notions bag. This cute pattern is special in that the bag is quilted on both front and back using only two hoopings. You choose which of the five bags to make during class.

Supplies:

Pattern:

  • Amelie Scott Designs’ Notion Organizers embroidery CD

Fabric

  • Fabric according to pattern directions (quilting cottons and 100% cotton fabrics preferred; fat quarters will work)

  • Specifically (see the PDF pattern instructions for each individual bag’s requirements):

    • Back of organizer and back lining: two 6.5” x 10.5” pieces

    • Front top fabric and front middle fabric: one 3” x 10.5” piece and one 9” x 10.5” piece

    • Front bottom fabric: one 9” x 10.5” piece

    • Scraps for applique, if appropriate for chosen bag

Thread

  • Embroidery threads for selected project

    • Threads may blend or contrast with fabrics for quilting

    • Specific threads for embroidery or applique image

Notions

  • No Show Mesh or Polymesh cutaway stabilizer

  • 6.5” x 10.5” piece of lightweight batting (e.g., Warm n Natural)

  • 14” (or longer) nylon zipper (non-separating, regular teeth)

  • Applique scissors (duckbill, HoopSisters, double bent embroidery applique scissors, or other scissors that can cut small details)

  • Low tack tape like blue painter’s tape or embroidery tape

  • Fabric folding pen

  • Scissors: sewing scissors and thread snips or embroidery scissors.

  • Size 80/12 microtex or sharp machine needles or embroidery needles

  • Wooden iron or “Roll and Press” tool, point turner, sharp seam ripper, tape measure, seam gauge

  • Sewing/Embroidery machine: clean and in good running condition. Must be able to accommodate 350 x 200 hoop or larger

  • 350 x 200 hoop (or larger) (Designs are approx. 165mm x 267mm)

  • Recommended: a clipboard (like you would see an athletic coach use)

  • Optional: Water soluble glue stick

  • Writing paper and pencil for notes, questions, etc.

Preparation before class:

  1. Print out directions for whichever bag you wish to make, or load onto a tablet or electronic device to bring with you.
